Otis is renewing its efforts to improve home elevator safety in collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Canada Health. These latest proactive measures seek to notify residential elevator customers of the potential hazards posed by an excessive space gap between the car and hoistway doors in certain products. Although Otis has not sold or installed private residence elevators in the U.S. or Canada since 2012, Otis is offering free inspection and installation of space guard(s), if necessary, to address potential risks.
These new measures are the latest in a series of efforts Otis has taken over the past 15 years to educate residential elevator customers about potential hazards and provide no-cost solutions. Prior initiatives implemented by Otis include advocating for code changes and increased code enforcement across the country, providing support for training courses sponsored by the National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities, retrofitting impacted elevators at Otis’ cost, and raising awareness through media

Where appropriate, Otis will offer to install a free space guard to mitigate the excessive space hazard.
Should any precautions be taken prior to inspection?
